Roman Lewis is still in his teens, yet there's a maturity in his work that dwarfs his years.
His debut EP stood out from the pack, with his deft touch allied to a sense of emotional nuance that simply couldn't be faked.
Someone deeply in touch with the inner workings of the heart, the 18 year old Londoner is currently prepping his second EP.
Recorded with Catherine Marks at her Assault & Battery Studios in London, much of the material was penned in the aftermath of a breakup, and this shadow looms large over new song 'When I Was Yours'.
Out now, it's about the lingering aftermath of heartbreak, and how easy it is to become trapped by your feelings.
The song itself became a form of catharsis, leading to that wonderful point where Roman realised that he had finally worked through those emotions.
Roman explains: “I was getting over someone and got to a place where I was just a little sad all the time, so I sat down and thought a little and realised how funny it all was. I was getting caught up on all these things that didn’t matter and realised how ridiculous I was being so just kind of laughed then wrote this song.”
He adds: “Writing it put me into a really good mood and listening to it does too now.”
Finding joy in heartbreak, release in finality, 'When I Was Yours' is both touching and direct, neatly distilling Roman Lewis' stellar abilities.
Tune in now.
Roman Lewis will play London's Courtyard Theatre on October 23rd.
