The era of the bedroom producer is upon.
Or, if we’re being pedantic, the era of the garage producer in the case of Memory Tapes. Real name Dayve Hawk, the beatsmith matches looking after his young daughter with creating new music.
Working in his home studio, Memory Tapes is the latest name for Hawk’s productions. ‘Seek Magic’ seemed to emerge over time, propelled by word of mouth and the tips from influential blogs.
Allowed time to retreat to his studio, Memory Tapes began work on a new album with a renewed sense of confidence. As a result, follow up effort ‘Player Piano’ has a clear direction mixing clean, sharp guitar lines with glistening production.
Available through Something In Construction, ‘Player Piano’ has been trailed by a series of remixes. Working with fellow underground starlets Fixers and ANR, Memory Tapes has added a dose of imagination to their tracks.
Now focussing on his own output, Memory Tapes released new album ‘Player Piano’ earlier this week (July 4th). Setting himself the challenge of writing “keyboard-based psychedelic girl group songs, a sort of Motown suicide note” the producer has managed to come within touching distance of his goal.
Taken from the new album, ‘Today Is Our Life’ has a clear, catchy melody but this is matched by enterprising, inventive production.
