Rebel, rebel – your hair is a mess…
The past few years have witnessed the indie scene being turned upside down, with the most provocative sounds being produced by the most unexpected of people. The latest example are Oxford’s Trophy Wife, whose quiet demeanour belies some fantastic songwriting.
Softly spoken, Trophy Wife has described their music as ‘ambitionless office disco’ and it’s easy to see why. Their sound is derived from the alternative 80s, the cold Manchester beats of New Order and the icy guitars of The Chameleons.
Bagged as a support act by Foals and Crystal Castles, the Oxford trio already have friends in high places. Boy-ish and fey, Trophy Wife have the same cute appeal as The Drums but without the irritating surf guitars.
Snapped up by Moshi Moshi, the band’s debut single ‘Microlite’ is a mini slice of musical genius. Displaying an exacting sonic attitude, Trophy Wife match this with a near vacant delivery.
Post-punk with melodies, or C86 with an edge ‘Microlite’ is set to be released in November and marks out the band’s polite yet staunch demeanour.
It seems that in the face of an overwhelming financial crisis, political disgrace and foreign wars no one wants a new generation have decided that apathy is the only resistance. Which both a good and a bad thing…
Listen to ‘Microlite’ now…
