Listening to Tycho, it’s impossible not to be swept up in parallels to the visual arts.
Real name Scott Hanson, the San Francisco based producer is also a respected graphic artist. It seems that his training seeps through to his music, with new album ‘Dive’ suggesting glorious desert landscapes.
Out now on Ghostly International, the album (Hansen’s third under this name) is essentially a bedroom project. Electronic music forms the outline of each piece, but Tycho adds in layers of acoustic guitars and bass to add texture.
One to file next to Oneohtrix Point Never, Emeralds et al ‘Dive’ at times has a beautiful drone feel, with the disintegrated electronics leaving ashes across the recording.
Retro-Futurism for sure, but Tycho insists that he isn’t set to become trapped in reference points. “Nostalgia is a common thread in my work,” he said recently “but this album wasn’t driven by that idea. I see these songs as artifacts from a future which might have more in common with our past than our present.”
Gaining widespread plaudits, Tycho was recently invited to remix Little Dragon. The pair hooked up for an Autumn tour, with Scott Hansen removing himself from the bedroom / studio routine just long enough to bring ‘Dive’ to glorious life.
The dates are now over, but Little Dragon insisted on Tycho re-working ‘Little Man’. Adding in his hazy, degraded electronics the San Francisco producer added a West Coast sunset feel to the original.
