The desert can do strange things to the mind.
Dwelling in then melting sands of California, Gonjasufi has long since lost sight of the average, everyday world. The rapper exists in a reality driven by mysticism and opiates, merging the mind and the body.
Debut album ‘A Sufi And A Killer’ was an incredible mixture of hip hop, jazz, underground rock and electronica. Despite such vast influences Gonjasufi managed to craft a unified album, together with producers such as The Gaslamp Killer and Flying Lotus.
Now a companion piece has emerged. Gonjasufi has handed his material over to a glittering array of producers, including some hugely respected names. As ever, Warp has handled the project managing to coax some unexpected talents out of the word work.
Broadcast And The Focus Group break cover to submit a brain melting remix, exploding Gonjasufi’s initial track into a psychedelic mosaic. Elsewhere, Bibio crafts some 80s R&B and Oneohtrix Point Never adds some motorik rhythms.
Amongst the finest remixes comes courtesy of Bear In Heaven. Stripping back Gonjasufi’s dense soundscapes, the production team seem to embody the vast, empty widescreen vision of the Californian desert.
