German label Kompakt don’t tend to sign duds.
The Cologne based imprint have gathered a well regarded reputation in electronic circles, merging dancefloor trends with experimental whims. New signings Walls come with great pedigree, consisting of members from Allez Allez and Banjo or Freakout.
Their debut album is a stunning mixture of psych-pop and electronica. In the post ‘Merriweather’ landscape everyone is looking to be the next Animal Collective, but Walls simply use their loop samples to create something startling and unique.
Chill-wave? Not quite, but their bedroom psych-noise is a joyous shout out to influences such as cLOUDEAD, early Spiritualized and of course Boards Of Canada. Mixing vintage analogue gear with up to date circuit boards, Walls have a natural affinity with Krautrock which lends itself well to the Kompakt roster.
With their self-titled debut album out on May 10th, Walls have given ClashMusic a free download to celebrate. Taken from the new long player, ‘Hang Four’ is given a Banjo Or Freakout remix resulting in some startling beat abstractions.
