Track Of The Day 4/11 – Scuba

Berlin Based Dubstep

Splintering into a thousand sub-scenes and micro-genres, the current state of dubstep has produced shelter for some inventive minds.

Based in Berlin, Scuba earned his stripes long ago. A notable producer in his own right, the bass don runs the esteemed Hot Flush label which flung out material from the likes of Distance and Vex’d.

Recently, though, Hot Flush has backed away from the standard dubstep template to release some critical cuts. With releases from Joy Orbison and Mount Kimbie, the imprint is one of the most vital on the bass scene right now.

It’s only right, then, that Scuba re-enters the fray. The producer is set to re-visit a number of early cuts, handing material over to rival producers.

Collected as ‘Triangulation – Interpretations’ the album sees Scuba pushes in a thousand different directions. From the fractured garage of FaltyDL to the out and out funky of Deadboy the producer’s bass legacy (echo?) can be felt across the myriad of styles.

Amongst the cuts, Scuba himself gets involved. DJ staple ‘Before’ is given a re-working by the Berlin producer, retaining the waves of sub-bass but adding some rattling, techno influenced drums.

A superb opening, Scuba sets the bar for over producers to follow. Out on Hot Flush from November 15th, ‘Triangulation – Interpretation’ is a stunning reinvention of a deeply influential producer.
