Track Of The Day 31/10 – Moon Duo

Halloween Thrills

The corporations can buy and sell as much as they like – Halloween retains a unique atmosphere.

Perhaps it’s just the time of year, a season when the trees rust over and leaves litter the pavement. Maybe it’s hidden memories from childhood, images of throwing a sheet over your head and cutting two holes for eyes.

Or maybe, just maybe Halloween really is a time when the spirits of the dead return to the Earth…

Tapping into the unique atmosphere which permeates October 31st, psych-drone duo Moon Duo have prepared new EP ‘Horror Tour’. The pair boast of having found an antique book of witches spells during a yard sale in New Hampshire (the state which houses Salem).

Inspired, Moon Duo began laying down tracks inspired by what they read. Given a suitably scary cover courtesy of Savage Wolf, the EP is a moody counterpoint to the pair’s debut album ‘Mazes’.

Whereas the full length has a lysergic driven white light pulsing through it, ‘Horror Tour’ is a sludgy, Sabbath inspired monster. A one off diversion, Moon Duo drive their psych vibrations into a disturbing new area.

Taken from the new EP, title cut ‘Horror Tour’ is a case in point. Lacking the kinetic energy of their debut, Moon Duo seem caught in stasis – the Halloween theatrics signalling a new dimension to their music.
