Track Of The Day 30/9 – Zombie Disco Squad

Baile Funk Special

Brazil is a nation steeped in poverty, injustice and – it seems – a thriving electronic dance scene.

The country which one spawned the Bossa Nova phenomenon has always loved to dress up and dance, so when Acid House broke across the UK Brazil was quick to follow. DJs in the country stopped off at Miami when flying to the States, exposing them to the sounds of Miami Bass.

Shipped back to South America in sealed crates, these discs would evolve and mutate in the Brazilian sun. Catching hold in the ghetto territories, Baile Funk adds some traditional percussion to the bass brew.

A huge scene in Brazil, the sounds of Baile have taken a decade to travel to Europe. Based in Berlin, Man Recordings are one of the foremost Western labels dealing in Baile Funk.

Combining Brazilian talent with the latest house producers, Man Recordings are celebrating their 5th anniversary. ‘Valeu!’ is a superb introduction to the scene, containing some classics as well as new material.

Taken from the album, Zombie Disco Squad cut ‘Danca Do Zumbi’ which mixes the percussive style of Baile funk with more European textures.
