Funny thing, maturity.
For a young band, maturity can be both a blessing and a curse. Take Wild Nothing – the band’s debut album ‘Gemini’ was a wonderfully evocative blend of dream pop and edgy Cure style guitars.
In between the notes and influences, though, fans devoured something blissfully nostalgic. Since then, Wild Nothing have released an EP and the odd single but a new release finds the band – gasp – maturing.
Heading to a recording studio for the first time, Jack Tatum is able to really focus on his songwriting. As a result, new single ‘Nowhere’ has a real sense of direction, a sense of purpose which ‘Gemini’ – often to its credit – lacked.
The sound itself has also shifted. There’s an appetite for Americana here, with a Harmonica wheezing gracefully in the background. Andrea Estella of Twin Sister is on hand to help out, with the overall effect being that of a group reaching maturation.
‘Gemini’ was a wonderful opening document, but it didn’t leave much room for maneuvre. By way of contrast ‘Nowhere’ – with it’s subtle Americana touches and shifting mood – seems to open up Wild Nothing to new influences, new artistic directions.
Captured Tracks are handling the single release, which will be limited to a mere 500 copies. Out on February 21st, you can stream the single below…
