The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart are dogged by reference points.
An extremely self-aware band, the Brooklyn group name drop their influences in interviews as well as their own material. Releasing a confident debut, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart had a definite pop streak.
Working on a follow up, the band tried to enforce a sense of immediacy. Hooking up with Alan Moulder and Flood, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart delivered their striking second album ‘Belong’ earlier this year.
Hitting the UK, the band’s material seemed to radiate sunshine. Escaping the clutches of their influences, the Brooklyn outfit have begun to be name-checked by new groups as an inspiration in their own right.
New single ‘The Body’ will only strengthen that. Out now, the release is handled by fast rising British imprint Play It Again Sam.
Taken from their recent album, the single may be sugar sweet but the lyrics are a painful study of feeling disconnected from your surroundings: “Tell me again what the body’s for, ‘cuz I can’t feel it anymore, I lost mine and I need yours”.
Freshly recorded for the single, flip-side ‘Tomorrow Dies Today’ is another blast of the sweet-sour formula. Listen below…
