Track of the Day 3/7 – The Low Anthem

'To Ohio' from their splendid new album...

The Low Anthem make the kind of understated and oh-so-slight music that one can’t over analyse, for fear it might begin to splinter under unnecessary scrutiny. When something’s this instantly striking in its elegance, best to leave it be.

Today’s TOTD is ‘To Ohio’, taken from the Rhode Island-formed trio’s new LP, ‘Oh My God, Charlie Darwin’ (out now on Nonesuch). It’s a pretty special album all told, dispensing Americana tinged with the most acute melancholy. To summarise it as a pretty listen seems dismissive, almost; but the adjective’s a very apt one when its many facets are explored. Faint praise is something unlikely to be spent on this great record.
