The indie pop boom has produced more than its fair share of copycats, of derivative, fuzzed up pretenders.
Golden Grrrls are not among them. Sometimes Glasgow, sometimes London the trio first caught our attention in 2010 when Night School stepped in to release debut single ‘Beaches’.
Weighed down with a chugging post-punk bass line, ‘Beaches’ was pop without falling into any set lineage. The sighing harmonies recalled indie pop luminaries, but the actual structure of the song seemed to veer off into strange locations.
Sweet, charming experiments in sound each cut from Golden Grrrls seems at once natural and methodical. Releasing a tour cassette last summer, the trio returned recently with new single ‘New Pops’.
Night School once again stepped in, and the hand pressed sleeves ensured that ‘New Pops’ captured attention down at yr local vinyl emporium.
The music itself represents another step forward for Golden Grrrls. ‘New Pops’ is a 90 second blast of melody, all chugging power chords and a daft, one line guitar solo that recalls Buzzcocks at their most endearing.
Flip side ‘Red Sea’ is a more ambitious affair. The guitar line cuts through the misty eyed voices, like a lighthouse blinking amidst fog. Building and building, ‘Red Sea’ could be the closest Golden Grrrls have come to reaching something quite shattering.
