Track of the Day 29/4 – We Fell To Earth

Disquieting avant-rock from ex-UNKLE man

Emerging from a darkness self-imposed after parting ways with James Lavelle’s UNKLE project, Richard File’s new We Fell To Earth group is a stirring proposition indeed, a fully-formed sound where one could expect something rather sketchy.

Joining forces with American vocalist and guitarist Wendy Rae Fowler, File’s new direction began to take shape over a series of intense sessions, where the music developed naturally and without compromise for what is and isn’t fashionable. Following their hearts as well as their heads, the duo’s end product material is deep and brooding, drifting close to the tension of Portishead albeit without the encroaching dread feel of the Bristol band – don’t expect to be left a dribbling wreck after sampling the wares of We Fell To Earth. It’s a lot warmer than you may predict.

With krautrock overtones and almost trip-hop atmospherics in the mix there’s no doubting that We Fell To Earth are familiar with favourable influences, but their self-titled EP (released this week) showcases inventiveness enough to separate the band from so many sound-alike merchants. And you can sample the flavour of what they’re offering with our Track of the Day – ‘Lights Out’.
