Nestled in a Portland recording studio, Mirrorring brought together two distinct yet complimentary talents.
In one corner, Jesy Fortino. Better known for her Tiny Vipers explorations, the musician agreed to work with Liz Harris – who records under the name Grouper, amongst others – on a full length album.
The results have escaped far beyond the North West corner of the United States. Mirrorring have an intensely introspective side, with their music tripping between electronic and acoustic tones.
A deeply meditative work, new album ‘Foreign Body’ is a languid exploration of sound. Unfolding at its own rate, the song titles seem to hint at a fascination with the natural world and the experience of listening.
Opening with ‘Fell Sound’, the theme comes to its culmination with centre point ‘Silent From Above’. At heart contradictory – how can any musical piece truly be silent? – Mirrorring seem to refer to an inner peace, an internal silence.
Mixing gentle, floating guitar lines with soothing voices, the intent doesn’t seem to be to create anything approaching a ‘song’ – at least, not in the conventional sense.
Rather, Mirrorring dwell on mood, atmosphere. ‘Silent From Above’ seems to dwell in pure sound, two sonic cartographers splashing their way across silent seas.
