Young Magic aren’t exactly prime remix fodder.
Out now, debut album ‘Melt’ doesn’t appear to have that much in common with dance music. Built up by Australian ex-pat Isaac Emmanuel, the trio seem to take their inspiration from whatever is at hand, improvising everyday objects into instruments.
What emerges is a trippy mixture of dream-like songwriting and sound textures that become impossible to place. Fusing tribal rhythms with delicate guitar lines, Young Magic’s distorted electronics add a hip hop dimension to their work.
Which is where the remix aspect comes into play. Young Magic have a tremendous control of textures, allowing plenty of space for rhythms to unfold and develop.
Handing ‘You With Air’ over to guest producer Anon, the results are intriguing. Adding hefty dollops of bass, the beatsmith seems to focus on the tribal, rhythmic clicks which underpin Young Magic.
Twisting Indonesian-born singer Melati Malay’s vocals into shards of sound, ‘You With Air’ is almost entirely re-built.
Yet the two tracks still share a common direction, a shared sense of purpose. Anon’s version is more directly psychedelic, more directly beat heavy but Young Magic’s original has something indefinable…
Call it magic.
