The avalanche of fuzzed up indie pop from the United States is showing no signs of slowing down.
Sometimes the sheer volume of shoegaze related ephemera from our American cousins can be overwhelming, alienating. However there’s no doubting that amongst the rip tide there’s a few pearls to be found.
Beach Fossils released one of the genre’s stand out albums last year, with the band’s skeletal songwriting adding a very human edge to the layers of guitar effects.
As usual, each member has about fifty side projects. Cole Smith is a member of Dive, a Brooklyn collective who have been working in a patchwork fashion on their debut album. Adding to the LP one piece at a time, a number of songs have emerged via the always reliable Stateside label Captured Tracks.
New single ‘Human’ is a case in point. Set to gain a seven inch vinyl pressing, Dive have the breezy, ethereal feel beloved of so many shoegaze acts.
But beneath the reverence there lies something deeply personal. Dive have managed to find the same emotional pull which drives parent group Beach Fossils, albeit matched by some gloriously drenched guitars.
Out tomorrow (November 29th) you can stream ‘Human’ below…
