Track Of The Day 27/4 – Lady Chann

First Lady Of UK Dancehall

Born in the ghettos of Kingston, dancehall was imported to the UK in crates.

Unloading at the London dockside, boxes of records would find their way into the hands of DJs, toasters and producers. Pretty soon, in fact, Britain has the number one dancehall scene outside of Jamaica.

Toddla T you’ll be familiar with. His debut album ‘Skanky Skanky’ was an explosive mix of dancehall, soca, R&B, dubstep and more. Designed to shake those booties, the Sheffield producer has now formed his own label.

Amongst the first signings to Girls Music is perhaps the UK’s finest dancehall queen. Lady Chann can spit rhymes as ferocious as any male MC, toasting over jittery beats that push the dancehall definition to breaking point.

Set to release her debut album for the Girls Music imprint later this year, Lady Chann has decided to tease fans with a new mixtape. Available from her MySpace, ClashMusic has grabbed a free preview.

Guest starring Maxsta, ‘Dun Dem Season’ is an ear catching take on dancehall’s legacy. Listen to it now… Grab it HERE.
