Mary Epworth – doesn’t that name seem familiar, somehow?
It probably should. See, Mary Epworth is Paul Epworth’s sister – the renowned producer, with a co-write credit on Adele’s ’21’. An industry titan, a giant whose work has stretched it’s tentacles around the globe.
Only, Mary Epworth stands apart from this. Not wishing to have much to do with the industry, the singer has dis-connected herself not only from her brother but the bulk of contemporary British music.
Steadfastly independent, Mary Epworth began building her debut album last year. Working in an art deco mansion somewhere in Berlin, the songwriter matched a beautiful, evocative sense of melody with something un-nerving.
Recent single ‘Black Doe’ is a case in point. On the surface, another pretty synth pop song, Mary Epworth lends the track something dark, intangible, foreign.
Handed over to a number of producers, ‘Black Doe’ will be expanded into a full blown remix EP on April 23rd. Young Edits, Small Pyramids, The Slow Waves and Jape take part – and ClashMusic has managed to grab a preview.
Young Edits is Luke Foskey, a Brisbane based producer whose taste in house has a funky edge. Stripping the track back down to its bare parts, the Young Edits re-work is all bass suggestion and percussive kicks and snares.
