One of the labels powering the Stateside indie pop explosion, Captured Tracks have earned a reputation for discovering new acts.
However recently the label has begun to re-issue long lost material, establishing a lineage which stretches beyond the usual suspects. Rifling through the crates, Captured Tracks are preparing to launch the Shoegaze Archives.
The first releases will hit record shops later this year, with Captured Tracks breathing new life into Should’s ‘A Folding Sieve’ and deardarkhead ‘Oceanside 1991 – 1993’.
Opening up shoegaze to wider discussion, Captured Tracks aim to demonstrate the diversity of a much maligned genre. Label boss Mike Sniper: “Shoegaze. Depending on what side of the fence you sit this is a compliment or a bane. A sound that seems definable only as: “you know, it’s shoegaze.” Loud, gauzy, melancholic and melodic, its appearance in the late 80’s has maintained a steady influence over the entire field of whatever it is we call indie rock ever since, and yet it’s ancestry is only now beginning to be understood.”
“Of course, there was Jesus and Marcy Chain, and then My Bloody Valentine, and then Slowdive and Ride. But that’s just the tip of the reverb and distortion iceberg…”
To toast the project, ClashMusic has expanded Track Of The Day to take in not one but TWO songs. Check out samples from New Jersey’s deaddarkhead and Austin, Texas folks Should below…
