Track Of The Day 26/9 – The Subways

Raucous Brits Return

Almost a decade into their career, The Subways have nothing to prove.

Second album ‘All Or Nothing’ was their heaviest effort to date, earning the band a support slot with AC/DC. The Australian band took The Subways on tour, exposing them to countless thousand new fans.

Retreating – exhausted – to the studio, The Subways opted to work on new material. The trio decided to keep a hard edge, but have also thrown in some unexpected post-punk influences.

At times, new album ‘Money & Celebrity’ recalls the jerky rhythms of early Talking Heads while the thin guitar tone is influenced by Gang Of Four. Yet the band’s own identity shines through with ‘Money & Celebrity’ fuelled by classic rock.

A pounding, powerful piece of rock music ‘Money & Celebrity’ is ostensibly an analysis of Britain’s obsession with the glitz and glamour of life in front of the camera lens. Fuelled in part by the band’s own success, the frustration and cynicism which fuels the lyrics is matched by some often euphoric music.

Recorded earlier this year, ‘Money & Celebrity’ saw The Subways team up with their fans via PledgeMusic. Helping to assist the trio through the recording process, fans were able to claim some limited edition and one off goodies.

Arranging a massive Autumn tour, the British live dates will see The Subways get back to what they do best. A band who thrive on the live arena, ‘Money & Celebrity’ is set to be brought to life night after night.
