Track Of The Day 26/3 – Escapists

Northern Lights

Funny how things change.

Looking at the indie landscape, you would be hard pushed to name more than a few vital, relevant British guitar bands. Our North American cousins, meanwhile, are suffering from a deluge of thought provoking acts.

So it’s no surprise to discover the influences of a band like Escapists. Formed at university in Bristol, the four piece initially bonded over bands like The Dears, Arcade Fire and The National.

It’s the latter who make the biggest dent on their music. Escapists have a broad sweep, with their music suggesting a desire to connect with a large audience but without losing any sense of intimacy.

Debut single ‘Post Gospel Blues’ was an assured piece of songcraft, all stirring of lyric and swooning guitars. Championed by John Kennedy, How Stephens and Tom Robinson – amongst others – the band are now ready to make their next move.

New EP ‘Burial’ drops on May 7th, with Euphonios helping to move the band onto the next step. Not quite the finished article – nothing this early could be – the new EP marks Escapists out as having a tangible sense of ambition.

As a quick preview, ClashMusic have nabbed ‘Northern Lights’. The closing track on the EP, the song neatly defines Escapists epic, widescreen sensibilities.

Mature, thoughtful songwriting there’s much more to Escapists than mere escapism…
