Riot Grrrl is such a mis-leading term.
Almost immediately seized upon by a genre hungry media, the term went from a fanzine in-joke to a catch all term for anyone who was a) female and b) had a guitar.
In reality, most records tagged as Riot Grrrl are just big, fun punk rock records with no ulterior motive. Hailing from Atlanta, The Coathangers fit right into this legacy.
The four piece were friends before ever forming a band, the move into music happening as naturally as they wanted it to be. Beginning as a ramshackle outfit, The Coathangers have become progressively less ramshackle as lengthy tours across the United States batter out their less cohesive elements.
Retaining that unpredictable touch, the group recently made time to record their debut album. Released in limited quantities on a Stateside label, The Coathangers have now been coaxed into a British release.
Intriguingly, new single ‘Hurricane’ will be released on see through flexidisc. X-Ray Recordings have found a pressing plant in San Francisco willing to work with the format, one of the last remaining factories able to do so.
The label’s second single, the see through flexidisc echoes the cheap and cheerful releases of the last great independent era. Backed with ‘Johnny’ both tracks are cut from the big, dumb fun school of punk rock.
Sloppy, unpretentious and at times chaotic ‘Hurricane’ is buoyed by a bubbling bass riff and guitars that scatter like The Slits at a house party. Funny, energetic and full of attitude The Coathangers demonstrate that the underground is still thriving.
