Of all the micro-genres to emerge in 2010, Witch House has perhaps been the most controversial.
Lo-fi electronica, Witch House combines near industrial style synths with slowed down hip hop beats. Vocals tend to be ethereal, with groups such as trailblazers SALEM using samples of choirs.
The effect is leave traces of sound, rather than sound itself. Ghostly, haunted music Witch House has split music fans, with some furious over the scene’s promotion of style over substance.
However to others Witch House is a fertile area for retro-Futurist exploration. Pulling electronic backwards, a new compilation from Disaro and God Don’t Like It aims to showcase some of the groundbreaking music emerging from the scene.
‘ISVOLT’ is available from December 6th and contains some spectacular music. Names such as ‘Misery Walk’ and ‘Modern Witch’ promote the idea of electronic music as something haunted, unable to escape the legacy of the past.
Set to be launched with a special party at London venue The Den on December 6th, the compilation is a superb introduction to the scene. As a special preview, ClashMusic has grabbed a free download of the White Ring track ‘Txc999’.
