Toasting their 13th anniversary, Memphis Industries have every right to party.
The English label have maintained a commitment to new music, taking chances where other imprints might have winced. Sticking to their own tastes, Memphis Industries have built up a roster which includes a love for homegrown talent as well as a taste for the exotic.
Hailing from Oklahoma, colourmusic are definitely in the latter camp. The band’s music doesn’t so much progress as evolve, continually shifting and changing into something new.
The band are as likely to introduce pop R&B elements as they are a slide guitar, with their psych wig outs something to behold.
colourmusic have a conceptual edge. Refusing to divulge specific interests and influences, the band instead cite colours as the starting point for their music.
To the band, each colour represents an emotion, a moment which can be pinned down. Debut album ‘my _____ is pink’ is a case in point – using colours to express human sexuality, colourmusic are able to remove any sense of titillation, instead dwelling on pure feeling.
Memphis Industries are set to celebrate their anniversary with the all star Lucky Thirteen concert next week. Taking place on November 30th, London’s KOKO will house a night long celebration of the label’s roster.
Taking control of the Track Of The Day section for one week, Memphis Industries are giving away a host of new music. ‘Tog’ by colourmusic is typically idiosyncratic, with its breezy, surrealistic songwriting palette placing it in a psych context.
