There’s a fine line between melancholic and morbid, a light division between pulling at your heartstrings and simply going too far.
Thankfully, Funeral Suits know how to tread this line. A Dublin oriented four piece, the band’s output thus far has been epic in size, scale and construction with famed producer Stephen Street on hand to lend them a few tips.
Not that they need it. Funeral Suits come buoyed with the confidence of a band who simply know where their limits are – and how to brush past them. Debut album ‘Lily Of The Valley’ is set to drop this summer, sits nicely in that Joy Division / Interpol / Editors lineage that the media will no doubt slot them into.
Except it doesn’t quite work. There’s a brattish-ness here, a confidence which Joy Division lacked. There’s a sense of glamour, of rejoicing in melancholy which Editors definitely don’t have.
Oh, and this isn’t some New York street cool thing either so don’t go getting Funeral Suits confused with Interpol. They belong on this side of the Atlantic, part of a pop tradition which veers between The Sound and Roxy Music.
Upcoming single ‘Colour Fade’ is a case in point. All martial drums, swooning vocals and harmonies that drift off into the rafters it’s a notable sign of intention.
Listen to it now…
‘Colour Fade’ is set to be released on July 16th.
