These days, it often seems that complexity is frowned upon.
Know your place, say the doubters – ignore the pitfalls of experimentation and keep things simple. Thankfully, Get Well Soon – an alter ego for German songwriter Konstantin Gropper – can’t be bothered listening.
Sitting somewhere between Patrick Wolf and Sufjan Stevens, Get Well Soon’s discography thus far is littered with expansive, vastly orchestrated pieces. A bit like Burt Bacharach but with a savage heart, Gropper demonstrates a near breathless willingness to shift past creative boundaries.
Get Well Soon’s new project is no exception. Titled, with typical flamboyance, ‘The Scarlet Beast O’ Seven Heads’ the new album is steeped in apocalyptic imagery, flooded with a sense that the future might not arrive.
New cut ‘Roland, I Feel You’ is a glorious introduction. A lengthy, continually evolving piece, the song itself uses little more than acoustic guitar and Konstantin Gropper’s voice. Gently untangling its many knots, Get Well Soon then surrounds the gentle, lilting melody with complex orchestration, taking jagged turns whenever possible.
