Rick James and dubstep – bet you didn’t expect to see those two in the same sentence.
But then, that’s the beauty of Slugabed. The Bath based producer re-worked ‘Superfreak’ into a bass bin rattler, just one of a flurry of cuts which he spread in an Utterly Butterly fashion across the British bass scene.
Part prankster, part serious sonic alchemist the producer recently decided to settle down. Hooking up with Ninja Tune, Slugabed’s irreverent sense of humour and forward thinking productions are at home with the label’s roster.
Now Sugabed is ready to make his next move. Debut album ‘Time Team’ is done and dusted, with Ninja Tune set to give the full length a release on May 7th.
Ahead of this, though, comes ‘Sex’. Literal, actual, sonic ‘Sex’ – for ’tis it’s title – the track finds Slugabed indulging his love of loose and heavy hip hop rhythms combined with day-glo synths which border on chiptune.
Like the theme for Turbo Outrun melting on top of a Dilla 12 inch, ‘Sex’ is all playful jibes mixed with heavy percussion.
Out on April 9th, remix duties are being handled by Daedalus and Groundislava. It’s the Daedalus mix which has caught our attention, with the producer seeming to stretch out ‘Sex’ until it looses all elasticity and shatters into pools of bass.
Oh, and it’s free.
