Florida has always been a stop off point, an intersection for American culture with styles from across the globe.
Leaving behind Tampa Bay, Dominique Young Unique decided to hook up with some British producers. Observing the parallels between the two areas shared love of bass, the rapper began crafting a series of mixtapes.
Opting to release music in this format rather than a track-by-track basis, Dominique Young Unique was able to allow herself to stretch.
Inaugural instalments ‘Domination’ and ‘Glamorous Touch’ are already well known, ratcheting up more than 80,000 downloads between them. Third time, though, is a charm and new mixtape ‘Stupid Pretty’ has made by far the biggest impression.
A blast of pop energy, bass styles and edgy attitude, ‘Stupid Pretty’ was a massive step forward for Dominique Young Unique. Comparisons to M.I.A. are fairly standard – visually conscious, a connection to Florida bass – but in reality ‘Stupid Pretty’ is just one stop off on a journey that has just got underway.
“I’m 19 now, and the “Stupid Pretty” mixtape shows I’ve grown as a person and an artist. It’s where I am at now” she observed recently. “My sound has developed. I’m stronger.”
Lead single (and title track) ‘Stupid Pretty’ is the one gaining most airplay. Fast becoming the singer’s calling card, Dominique Young Unique has handed the cut over to a some close friends.
I.R.O.K. have supplied a deft, electro inspired re-cut that strips back ‘Stupid Pretty’ and emphasises its dancefloor edge.
