Beginning life as one man and a loop pedal, Remember Remember have grown to become a fully functioning collective.
Removing themselves to a primary school hall on the south side of Glasgow, Remember Remember began constructing their second album last year. Songwriter Graeme JD Ronald took charge, with the seven piece wrapping their instrumentation around his often quite delicate musical ideas.
Remember Remember seem to have internalised the loop format, with their material taking a simple idea and building into grandiose structures. At times bordering on Krautrock, the nature of the music turns repetition into bliss.
‘The Quickening’ is due to be released on September 26th, with Rock Action acting as a home for the material. The loose knit collective are joined by several guests on the album, including Glasgow based songwriter RM Hubbert.
The guitarist adds some nylon string flourishes to the material, mixing something gently human to the imposing structures.
‘The Quickening’ seems to mark a new period of confidence for the group, who also work with a string quartet. Yet there is also a distinct ideal of time and place – ‘Ocean Potion’ has a sense of primitive Celticism running through it, while ‘Scottish Widows’ longs for the shores of Caledonia.
Taken from the album, ‘John Candy’ is a salute to the late American comedian that has a neat punch line of its own.
