Dãm-Funk (pronounced ‘Dame’) is the man owning Southern Cali space funk right now.
Having forged a name for himself locally in West L.A., at his Monday-night Funkmosphere parties, his double-disc debut ‘Toeachizown’ on Stones Throw is giving the rest of the world a taste for his futuristic refashioning of early-80’s vintage boogie and modern soul.
‘Hood Pass Intact’ is a free download we’re serving up for you that typifies his style; galactic synths sing like Roger Troutman’s ghost over stonecold g-funk beats.
The 2-hour extra-long-player pays its respects to acts like Slave, Aurra, early Prince – and more obscure contemporaries from the same mold – so for any of you looking for a guided path into the classic West Coast sound, the first thing you need to do is pick up this record (released worldwide October 20th).
Then the second thing you need to do is catch the man in live action, he returns to the UK this week starting at London’s Plastic People.
