Brooklyn is overflowing with talent right now.
A new breed of electronic producer is emerging, inspired by icy synths and chillwave’s retro-Futurism. However there’s no point in glacial soundscapes if the tunes aren’t there to support them.
Real name Elizabeth Harper, Class Actress began life as an acoustic clad singer-songwriter. Releasing her debut album on Chris Taylor’s Terrible imprint, the artist made a name for herself via folk infused – often quite stark – songwriting.
However for her second album Class Actress has decided to take an unexpected turn. The songwriter has poured herself into electronic music, taking her music into a very different direction.
‘Rapprocher’ is out now on Paw Tracks, with Class Actress managing to pull off the unlikely transition. The album feels very natural, matching strong songwriting with the emotional tug of her songwriting.
The lyrics often fall into quite dark, personal places with Class Actress dwelling on themes of love lost, despair and inadequacy. Yet there is beauty in the suffering, with the producer finding a redemptive edge.
The lightness of the music holds the lyrical content back from the abyss. The synth sounds are derived from house, with the bounce of the beats finishing the light / dark, sweet / sour combination.
Taken from the album, ‘Weekend’ is the latest Track Of The Day.
