Cathy Jain came to Britain when she was 13 years old, leaving behind her native China.
Relocating with her family, she spent her teens finding a way to navigate a strange country, all while retaining elements of her heritage.
Music became key to this process. Cathy Jain speaks fluent Chinese, and she also plays the guzheng – a traditional instrument – and these elements interweave with her own creativity.
New single 'cool kid' is a low-key offering, with the pared down sonics underpinning a lyric which discusses teen alienation and the urge to find yourself.
There's a hint of R&B in her alt-pop blend, with Cathy Jain locating something effortlessly relaxing.
She comments: "‘Cool Kid’ is about how so much of our time is spent trying to project images of ourselves to others, and how we define other people by projecting our own emotions onto them. I wanted it to have a laid-back vibe, this time with hints of R&B and hip-hop. It's a late summer evening by a river."
Tune in now.
Catch Cathy Jain in London at Gold Dust on July 28th.
