Track Of The Day 18/10 – Hejira

'I Don’t Belong To Anyone'

Hejira recently undertook a very special – and highly personal journey.

Singer Rahel Debebe-Dessalegne returned to Ethiopia, her first trip to the African nation since her father was buried there in 2012.

Travelling across the entire breadth of the country, she was joined by her band mates at the end for a series of exploratory writing and recording sessions.

It's had a profound impact one the way that the band make music. Returning to London, Hejira threw themselves into a frenzied period of activity, fusing samples from old Ethiopian cassettes with their own furtive ideas.

Launching their own label (Lima Limo Records, the group will then release new album '‘The Lima Limo Ceremony' early next year.

Right now, though, Clash is able to premiere new cut 'I Don’t Belong To Anyone'. Soulful, poetic, and yet gently groundbreaking, it feels as though Hejira are burrowing inwards in order to find new pathways, new avenues of exploration.

The mark of a band in powerful transition, you can check out 'I Don't Belong To Anyone' below.

Catch Hejira live at St. Pancras Old Church in London on November 17th.
