Retreating from the hipper than thou entreats of the New York music scene, songwriter Kyle Wilson retreated to the wilds of British Columbia.
A devoted rock climber, Wilson scaled some of the highest peaks in the region in an attempt to lose himself amidst the landscape – but then he fell.
Left alone in hospital with a serious back injury, songs began drifting in through his window. Receiving extensive treatment, Kyle Wilson was discharged along with an album’s worth of material.
Forming Milagres – Spanish for ‘miracles’ doncha know? – the four piece have a fiercely independent identity. Amidst the morass of top-button-clad hep kids doing the round, this Big Apple group emphasise character over endless point scoring.
Buoyed by Wilson’s effortless, keening tenor Milagres have a spectral, quite unexpected feel. Debut album ‘Glowing Mouth’ has been picked up by Memphis Industries, who have been instrumental in bringing the band to wider attention.
Currently on tour across the UK, Milagres recently dropped by the ClashMusic office to drop off a rare non-album cut. ‘Black Blizzard’ opens with tape fuzz and scrappy abstraction before Wilson’s voice takes over.
The pounding, euphoric music offsets Kyle Wilson’s dark vocal performance, which sits just on the right side of operatic.
