Buttering Trio hail from Tel Aviv, a city with a complex history.
The group can't fail to notice the political situation that surrounds them, and this bleeds into the lyrics of new album 'Threesome'.
Out on November 18th, it's a fantastic fusion of elastic future-funk and soulful vocals, with lyrics that veer from introspection to outright rage.
'Refugee Song' is a real highlight, and it's a moving tribute to the ongoing refugee crisis in the Middle East and Europe. Buttering Trio explain:
"The making of it was a steady process of listening, rearranging, adding the lyrics and rearranging again. It features our good friend, which is also Rejoicer’s cousin, Tomer Bar, on keys and harmony. The lyrics came naturally, inspired by Tom Robbins’ book Jitterbug Perfume as well as by the global refugee situation. We are perpetually confronted with issues of ‘home’. We are either looking for home or being taken away from home, even feeling like we have to fight for home. This could be an actual physical state but also a state of mind. We ask all these questions until it starts to feel as if the questions are themselves the purpose of it all. When we try to answer, what comes out is this “I don’t know”, again and again until it becomes it's own new song."
Clash is able to premiere the hard-hitting video, which perfectly expands on the poignant lyricism. "The video was made by Agata and Dorel, refugees of a special kind," say the band. "They documented themselves in their search for a home together, perfectly capturing the intimacy and innocence of it all."
