Not many new artists borrow their name from a Greek god, but then not many new artists are like Circe.
The London based newcomer commented recently: “Circe encapsulated everything I was feeling as I began writing. I was enraptured by the tales I read of powerful, mystical, she can turn men who have betrayed or hurt her into pigs, but what resonated with me most was her unusual vulnerability and humility that got her thrown out of the house of gods.”
Mystical songwriting with a dreamy feel, her somnambulist psych-pop has already won support from 6Music and her latest single is a powerful return.
An ecstatic piece of dream pop, 'Barely Breathing' was seemingly written on the sea front, and it's reverb-saturated production has a suitably hazy feel.
Interlocking with gauzy electronics, it's a uniquely suggestive work. “The sea became a metaphor for my mental state at the time,” she tells us. “The mercurial nature of the sea and its intrinsic dichotomy of pleasure and danger was like a mirror for my overactive romantic imagination. Ultimately the song is a tonic for feverish despair. I think there is an army behind every heart break. In my case the army is my instruments and the song is an emotional battle rather than a loss.”
Produced by Blood Red Shoes’ Steve Ansell the release is accompanied by a beautiful video, one that channels abstract cinema from the 20s.
Directed by Rachel Povey, it's sci-fi feel connects with the song's message of hurtling out of control. Tune in now.
