Dubstep was never really renowned for its soulful characteristics. Techno dread, for sure, but… soul?
However a new breed of producers and musicians are taking bass weight and re-introducing something tender. Submotion Orchestra are sitting at the forefront, with the collective fusing a soulful edge with jazzy flourishes and plenty of heavy, heavy sub-bass electronics.
New single ‘It’s Not Me, It’s You’ is a case in point. The collective’s first step since debut album ‘Finest Hour’ the track will emerge on May 7th and finds Sunmotion Orchestra continually pushing forward.
Hardened by 12 months on the road, the band’s chemistry comes to the fore. Playing with vocals in a Todd Edwards fashion, ‘It’s Not Me, It’s You’ is suffused with bass but with plenty of bass textures.
Taz Modi had the following to say earlier this year: “The new album is shaping up to be a blinder… There are things that should both satisfy fans of the first album, and surprise them too. Hopefully ‘It’s Not Me It’s You’ will do both.”

As a special treat, Submotion Orchestra have handed ClashMusic a remix of recent cut ‘Angel Eyes’.
Planas steps in on production duties, pulling the track in a more pure dubstep direction. There’s a reggae kick which is reminiscent of classic Digital Mystikz, with the bass saturation owing a debt to (early!) Rusko.
An original member of Gentleman’s Dub Club, Planas accentuates the drops and pulls a few more nuances out of the riddims.
