Robert Pollard is one of the true heroes of American indie rock.
The songwriter pushed Guided By Voices to become one of the best loved groups of their generation, with the band’s vast back catalogue witnessing their emergence from scratchy, lo fi roots to something rather more respectable – in Pollard’s own words, “semi-collegial”.
Reforming to play Matador’s one off birthday spectacular in Las Vegas, Guided By Voices decided to make the re-union permanent. New album ‘Let’s Go Eat The Factory’ is set to drop in January, with respected British independent Fire Records set to take charge of the band’s first new full length in a decade.
Lead single ‘Doughnut For A Snowman’ is the perfect introduction. A mere one minute 44 seconds long, the cut is prime Guided By Voices – surreal yet witty lyrics, off kilter guitars and Pollard’s askew pop touch.
The vinyl edition sold out almost instantly, with Guided By Voices providing fans with a choice of four B-sides. ‘So High’ is a Robert Pollard song, while ‘Without Necks’ and ‘Fish On My Leg’ were recorded at Mitch Mitchell’s house. Just to emphasise that the band remain a collective entity, the final B-side ‘1234’ is a new Tobin Sprout song.
Apparently one of the “twinkliest” things Robert Pollard has ever written, ‘Doughnut For A Snowman’ is the first single from the “classic line up” of Guided By Voices (Robert Pollard, Tobin Sprout, Mitch Mitchell, Greg Demos, and Kevin Fennell) in fifteen years.
