A much hyped debut, a blog genre and a reclusive persona.
All the signs were that Washed Out would soon become well… washed out. However Ernest Greene has continued to push forward, expanding to become a full band while refining his production techniques.
Now signed to Weird World, material continued to leak throughout 2010. Adding to the expectations surrounding his debut, Washed Out must have wondered if the internet hype would ever go away.
With the release of debut album proper ‘Within and Without’ on July 11th, the band have met every pronouncement made about their music. Washed Out have involved into something of real depth and character, with the album proving that their music moves beyond flash-in-the-pan blog genres.
Recorded last year, ‘Within and Without’ retains their trademark mixture of blissful samples and ethereal vocals. Expanding to a full band gives Washed Out added muscle, while Greene’s imaginative songwriting continues to come into fruition.
Out today (July 11th) the album has the character of a faded photograph, of something from the past distorted within a new context. Announcing a series of British dates across the summer, the band are set to preview the album this week with shows at Lovebox and Rough Trade Trade East.
Taken from the album, ‘Eyes Be Closing’ acts as great introduction. Opening ‘Within and Without’ the track is all woozy 80s samples, seeming as if it were to fade away at any second.
