Track Of The Day 11/6 – Gang Colours

Troy Gunner Remix

Gang Colours – it’s a foreboding moniker.

Yet on record, Gang Colours are anything but. A vehicle for Will Ozanne’s freewheeling imagination, the Southampton producer is responsible for some of the most allusive, flexible productions to pass our way in some time.

Rhythmically, Gang Colours’ can sttrreeeeeetch in ways that recall a jazz musician. Never slipping into one set style or even mood, debut album ‘The Keychain Collection’ was a continually surprising, always evocative set.

New single ‘To Repel Ghosts’ is a case in point. First, there’s the title – what it is with Ozanne’s way with words? – which immediately sets you on age, before the beats crackle somewhere between bass seduction and glitch abstraction.

Leaving room to explore, ‘To Repel Ghosts’ comes equipped with some wonderfully varied remixes. George Fitzgerald stepped in to re-work Gang Colours, offering up something which was sheer 2-Step Futurism.

The week’s first Track of the Day though, comes from Troy Gunner. Associated with the Mindset stable, the producer’s own brand of bass meditation has gradually been attracting plaudits from high quarters.

This latest remix will only serve to increase that. Warm, thick, syrupy beats come accompanied by warped, woozy vocals which never lose the emotive touch of the original.
