Shoegaze seems to have been hi-jacked.
An invented term anyway, the second wave of shoegaze acts seem to fixate on the more ramshackle, blissful elements. A Place To Bury Strangers seem to have other ideas, however.
The Brooklyn band have a fascination with noise. Guitarist and frontman Oliver Ackermann builds his own guitar pedals, twisting his sound in bracing, unforgiving new directions.
With customers including Kevin Shields, it’s clear that A Place To Bury Strangers are a match for their forebears. Far from a retro act, the Brooklyn group have a post-punk bass weight which acts as an anchor for their noise diversions.
Working at their home studio, the band have completed work on a new EP. Now on Dead Oceans, A Place To Bury Strangers have apparently found a condensed pop touch alongside their love of blistering feedback.
‘Onwards To The Wall’ offers some evidence of this. The noise collective manage to pare down some of the more nerve-testing elements of their sound, placing some soothing melody in its place.
Available from February 6th, ClashMusic has grabbed ‘So Far Away’ as the final Track Of The Day this week. As solid as concrete, the track finds A Place To Bury Strangers even more comfortable in their own sound.
