Some things just happen by accident.
Releasing music for years now – and making it for even longer – Damien DeRose has entered fans’ lives in the most unexpected of ways. A chance encounter on the radio, an unexpected support slot or a eulogising blog (hello!) has all helped spread his Peasant project across the globe.
Somehow, by hook or by crooke, Peasant have built themselves a solid fan-base. Sweet, lilting acoustic songsmithery, the band are too pop to be labelled folk – but then, when did pop ever come in such tender batches?
New album ‘Bound For Glory’ is a case in point. Picking neatly where previous long player ‘Shady Retreat’ left off, the album is a compact collection of experienced-hued vignettes that are wistful without being melancholic, sweet without being saccharine.
Out on April 16th via London based imprint Schnitzel Records, ‘Bound For Glory’ – it’s title snatched from Woody Guthrie – is a deeply American collection. All sunsets on the porch, the shadows of white picket fences drawn across the lawn, Peasant have a deep, enduring charm which is difficult to shake off.
