Toro Y Moi has spoken to ClashMusic about two new projects he has begun work on.
Toro Y Moi released his debut album ‘Causers Of This’ earlier this year, igniting the blogosphere in the process. The American producer was pulled into the chillwave genre, tagged alongside artists such as Neon Indian and Washed Out.
An always controversial term, ‘chillwave’ is a broad church. However with two inventive projects under way, Toro Y Moi is moving far away from any blog derived genres.
Working on a follow up to ‘Causers Of This’ the producer is set to work with acoustic instruments once again. “Well the big difference is that the next album isn’t electronic. I wanted to see if I could make songs similar to what I’ve been doing but without being electronically altered. But it’s a different sound over all I think.”
Moving away from electronic production styles has altered the way Toro Y Moi approaches songwriting. “Of course, when you record electronically you are literally writing and recording at the same time” he explained.
“But for a lot of this album I record the parts, look at the wav file, and that’s it. I want it to remain the way I recorded to preserve character and to be true to the process.”
However Toro Y Moi is not leaving electronic music behind entirely. The producer is planning to launch his new dance moniker Les Sins later this year, paying more attention to club styles.
“I wanted to start making dance music to see if I could do it” he explained. “I love all house music and electronic music styles and I just want to something like that, that’s my own.”
Meanwhile the producer explained how he patches together such disparate samples. “I remember when I first sampled something I found a song that sampled the same song and I really brought me down. That just made me dig deeper. Sometimes I like to sample same BPM stuff but the best results are from stuff that’s not sync’d up right.”
