Toria Wooff’s ‘The Waltz Of Winter Hey’ Is Potent Gothic-Folk

A sound painting that feels both ancient and timely...

Bolton songwriter Toria Wooff has shared new song ‘The Waltz Of Winter Hey’.

An independent figure with twin artistic practise as both a songwriter and painter, Toria Wooff draws on her own experiences to craft the universal. Leaning in to the more austere aspects of folk songwriting, her emotional impact has a gothic charm.

Working with partner in rhyme and intuition, producer, mix engineer and guitarist James Wyatt in his Sloe Flower recording studio, her work aims for an intuitive specificity. “It’s mostly about making the mundane things in life beautiful,” Toria says. “There’s a pragmatic reason behind all I do, and I always take the most aesthetically pleasing approach. I combine everyday language with prettier, longer and poetic words so the surface might have one meaning but there will be many others the deeper you go. The most beautiful words are desperate, pinning and punch at the gut.”

Set to host A Somewhat Gothic Christmas at Manchester’s The Castle Hotel on December 18th, Toria Wooff has just shared an icy blast of new material.

Out now, ‘The Waltz Of Winter Hey’ is spartan, reminiscent of Anne Briggs or Karen Dalton in places. She’s very much rooted in Northern landscapes, however, with Toria explaining…

When I’m on the road I like to read old stories from the places where I play. The West Pennine Moors are quite creepy but is missing some good ghost stories, so I decided to write my own. The song is about a woman who is already dead and watches her husband take up with a young woman, so she curses him and brings him to the grave.”

Tune in now.
