Toni Sancho has shared new single ‘Everybody Leaves’.
The songwriter’s quietly powerful work has garnered traction online, with Greg Gonzelez – creative lynchpin of Cigarettes After Sex – shared her first ever released recording via his own Spanish Prayers imprint.
Since then, Toni Sancho has bloomed. Her label Blue Daisy Records has become a platform not only for Toni’s own work, but for those around her – she’s called it “a Trinbagonian Creative Movement”.
New single ‘Everybody Leaves’ is out now, the dreamy sonics dealing with a real-life sense of distance between Toni and her loved ones. Lyrically, it pushes back against victimhood, granted her emotions space to filter through.
Beautifully done, the song highlights her potency while also leaning in to Toni Sancho’s strengths. She comments…
“I wrote ‘Everybody Leaves’ when I was away from my home and could not return. I felt distant from all my friends, and I was really clinging to a particular relationship I had, because it was the only sense of home that I was able to hold onto. So, when this person left, I remember feeling the deepest loneliness I had ever felt. I wrote this song to cope. It’s almost like a lullaby, as though I’m trying to soothe myself. Everybody leaves and this is okay, I’m telling myself. I’m feeling so strongly, and this is okay too. And even if everybody does leave, my feelings still matter, and I still matter. I listen to the song, and the rhythm and the cadence of my voice, and it sounds like where I come from. It reminds me that home is always with me.”
“This song interrupts the victimhood that’s been so prominent in a lot of my music so far. This is what I mean when I say the music is helping me as a person more than anything else, because I stopped needing people so deeply as soon as I’d finished making it. I hope it does the same for others.”
Tune in now.
