One time Britpop star Tommy Scott of Space has spoken out after he was the victim of a disgraceful death hoax.
The Liverpool musician formed Space in the early 90s, finding success with his carefree brand of guitar pop. Singles such as ‘Avenging Angels’ flew up the charts, with their album ‘Tin Planet’ becoming a top three success in 1998.
The band released their last album ‘Suburban Rock ‘N’ Roll’ in 2004, before splitting the following year. Tommy Scott swiftly moved on, forming his new venture The Drellas with some close friends and renowned local musicians.
However the singer was the victim of a death hoax recently. Reports in the local press suggested that Tommy Scott has suffered heart failure, with the news even spreading to local radio.
The hoax reached stunning levels, with a photograph of the singer’s gravestone even appearing on one website.
Fans were immediately worried, but due to the close knit nature of the Liverpool music scene the hoax was soon uncovered. The mystery is thought to originate from a press release which is believed to originate from Scott’s record label Antipop.
Responding to the prank, Scott blasted to the Liverpool Echo: “I can’t say how angry I am about this. I’m alive and well, but to have my mum believing I was dead was beyond a joke. I just can’t believe this has happened.
“The phone hasn’t stopped, but now we just want to find out who is responsible. There’s going to be hell to pay.”
A police investigation is now under way.
