Tom Waits has shared a previously unheard take on ‘Get Behind The Mule’.
The American artist’s unique catalogue is laden with gems, ranging from his early bar fly piano-rooted work through to the breaking-the-chrysalis moment of ‘Swordfishtrombones’.
Almost exactly 25 years ago, Tom Waits delivered another aesthetic high, with his album ‘Mule Variations’ earning ecstatic praise.
Matching Brechtian theatre to surrealist poetic, the music moved from the roots of gospel through to avowedly challenging, left-field tones.
Record label ANTI- was actually specifically formed to release ‘Mule Variations’, an outreach from punk redoubt Epitaph Records. To mark the silver anniversary, previously unheard take ‘Get Behind The Mule (Spiritual)’ has been placed online – little more than that remarkable vocal and a Wurlitzer organ, it’s nonetheless an incredible exercise in world building.
“Reaching the 25-year milestone for Anti Records, I am filled with gratitude for Tom Waits and his album, ‘Mule Variations’ album which didn’t just start our label; it sparked a lasting partnership built on trust, creativity, and a love for pushing artistic boundaries,” said Epitaph Founder and CEO Brett Gurewitz.
Added ANTI- President Andy Kaulkin: “I’ve personally been a major Tom Waits fan for as long as I can remember. We started the label to release his music. Tom’s embodiment of the spirit of artistic authenticity and resilience was our north star when we started out, and his unparalleled creativity continues to inspire and drive everything we do.”
Tune in now.
