Thy Young Steps Up with Debut Album, ‘Scent Of Amie’

The Sierra Leonean producer pieces together a bright and introspective record...

Thy Young has shared his debut album ‘Scent Of Amie’ via Survival Records.

Written for his late mother, the record weaves between traditional influences, cross-genre collaborations and daring flecks of electronic production. Amongst the album’s highlights is ‘Enjoyment’, a bright and celebratory moment of afrobeat instrumentation that invites the likes of Arkman and MDG My Dearest. Sporting rhythmic basslines, immersive vocal sections and the West African Gumbe drum, the trio come together once more on the track’s summer-ready visuals.

An established force within Sierra Leone’s emerging music scene, Thy Young injects his production with a broad array of influences, reflecting on the trajectories of 2pac, Jimmy B, Amie Kallon and beyond. In turn, the artist has worked with an extensive list of musicians, introducing his distinct style to the work of Kontri Boss to Dom B and Innocent Kuti. The current day sees the artist push forward with his solo career, pairing tradition and a contemporary perspective across an emotive body of work.

Speaking on his latest release, Thy Young expands: “Scent Of Amie, a dedication to my late mother, pulsates with the vibrant rhythms of Afrobeats, enriched by traditional sounds, such as the Gumbe drum, creating a mesmerizing fusion of West Africa and contemporary sounds that captivate the souls of audiences. My album not only features new up-and-coming artists but also legendary musicians such as Amie Kallon, and Steady Bongo. I’m very proud of the cross-generational aspect of this project.”
