The xx Respond To Mercury Win

London group toast victory

The xx have revealed their surprise at being named the winners of this year’s Barclaycard Music Prize.

One of the biggest awards in the British music industry, the Barclaycard Music Prize generates astonishing public interest. Capable of turning an artist into a household name, this year’s shortlist was fiercely contested.

London group The xx emerged victorious last night (September 7th) having been bookie’s favourites from the start. Also on the shortlist was Paul Weller, with Foals and Laura Marling also hotly tipped.

However it was to be The xx who waltzed away with the prize. Speaking at a press conference shortly afterwards, the London trio appeared deeply shocked at having won the prestigious award.

“We made this album (‘xx’) in a converted garage at our record label,” said Romy Madley Croft. “We felt very lucky at the time to use it, but I think we’d love to make our own studio, somewhere where we can just experiment and let Jamie (Smith) produce.”

A tube strike threatened to disrupt proceedings, but the lavish event went on as planned. The xx were set to hold a victory party, but the trio weren’t sure if their friends could make it to the event.

“We thought we’d throw one win or lose,” she revealed. “Hopefully people can make it with the tube strike!”

Meanwhile, renewed press coverage has sent The xx’s debut album racing back up the charts. HMV’s Gennar Castaldo predicted a high chart placing when sales are added up on Sunday.

“Of all the albums nominated, this is the one that probably has the most scope to sell a load more if it won, so retailers and the band’s label are likely to be very happy. The XX were already well on their way, but this award gives the band a great platform to really push on and connect with an even wider audience.”

“Their debut album has enjoyed fantastic word-of-mouth and very respectable sales since its release, but with the Mercury prize now lighting the touch paper, we expect demand for it to really rocket – at least five fold over the coming days, accompanied by surge back into the top 3 of the UK charts.”
